Are all healthcare facilities in Abu Dhabi connected to Malaffi?

The Malaffi onboarding process is carried out in phases and we are expecting to connect all Abu Dhabi healthcare facilities by early 2022. Please note that all data sets from the connected facilities will not be immediately available, as those are also captured in phases. To find out who is connected to Malaffi, and which data sets they are contributing, please check this page on our website.

Will patient data from all UAE facilities be available in Malaffi?

The mandate of Malaffi is to connect all healthcare facilities in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has plans to enable information exchange between all healthcare providers on a federal level in the UAE.

Where can I find out who is connected to Malaffi?

Please visit this page on our website to find a list of providers who are connected to Malaffi. Facilities that are connected to Malaffi will receive a Malaffi Connected Certificate and may display the Malaffi Connected Symbol on their website. Which additional types of data will be made available in Malaffi?

At present the following data can be viewed in Malaffi:
– Patient demographic
– Laboratory results
– Procedures
– Vital signs
– Encounters
– Radiology reports
– Diagnosis
– Immunisations
– Allergies
– Medications
– Problems
– Clinical documents

To continue increasing the value of the clinical information in Malaffi, we are working to include radiology images and appointments. In addition, we will be looking at the technical feasibility of adding traces such as ECGs, EEGs and spirometry in the future.

Will radiology images be available in Malaffi?

At the current time, only radiology reports are available in Malaffi. However, Malaffi is working towards adding radiology Images to the platform and are expecting to have these available in 2022. These will be implemented using a phased approach.

Can information in Malaffi be downloaded as a PDF?

Yes, recently we enabled the ability to download and print laboratory results, radiology reports, vital signs and clinical documents.

How can a patient’s file be accessed in Malaffi for the first time?

Before you can access the Malaffi record for a patient, the patient must arrive in person and be registered in the Electronic Medical Record system (EMR) of your facility. Once this occurs, Malaffi receives a registration message, and the system will work to match the patient’s EMR record with the patient’s Malaffi record. If the matching criteria are met, you will then be able to access your patient’s Malaffi record by clicking on the link embedded in your EMR. If demographic details have been entered incorrectly in yours or any other EMR, this may prevent the matching of the EMR record with the patient’s Malaffi record, and you may not see all the data for your patient.

Why am I not able to see any or some data for my patients?

This could be due to one of the following reasons:
• As the onboarding uses a phased approach, the patient information you are looking for may not be available because the facility it should come from has not yet been connected to Malaffi
• The patient information from a specific facility that you are looking for may not yet be contributing the particular data type to Malaffi. For example – You are looking for discharge summaries from a specific facility, however that facility is currently not sending clinical documents to Malaffi and maybe in the process of connecting that data type
• The EMR system of the particular facility does not have the capacity to configure and share that specific data set with Malaffi
• If demographic details have been entered incorrectly in yours or any other EMR, this may prevent the matching of the EMR record with the patient’s Malaffi record and you may not see all the data for your patient

We recommend checking this page on our website, to verify the connection status of the facility you are looking for. For any other issues listed above, please contact the IT support of your facility who will investigate why the patient record is not available to you. You may need to note the patient MRN to support the investigation.

What should I do if I experience a technical issue with Malaffi?

If you experience any technical issues with Malaffi, please contact your organisation’s IT department to first investigate if the issue is related to the IT infrastructure of the facility before they reach out to the Malaffi IT support desk. This is to investigate whether the technical issues are occurring locally and can be resolved internally before raising it with Malaffi for further investigation. If you are encountering problems with a particular patient record, please keep note of the patient MRN as this may be required by the IT Support team during the investigation.

How do I receive training on Malaffi?

As per the DOH Policy, providers are expected to ensure that each of its Malaffi authorised users undergo continuing and/or refresher training on an annual basis as a condition of maintaining authorised user status. If you require training, please contact your training point of contact. The training videos are also available on our YouTube channel here. In addition, Malaffi also conducts awareness session on how to utilise the system more efficiently, which can also be arranged through your training point of contact.

How does Malaffi protect patient confidentiality?

Ensuring privacy and security of patient information is a priority for the Department of Health and Malaffi, as we also follow Abu Dhabi Healthcare Information and Cyber Security (ADHICS) standards. The view of patient information in Malaffi relies on role-base access and organizational security which is assigned by your IT team to ensure users are assigned the appropriate security level based on their functional needs and job role. Only Level 1 users are able to ‘Break the Privacy Seal’ to access all patient data which includes sensitive patient information. All user access is monitored and logged.

What is the difference between Malaffi HIE and the Cerner EMR system at SEHA?

The brand name ‘Malaffi’ was originally used for the Cerner EMR system at SEHA from 2012 to 2019. In 2019, the Department of Health chose to use the iconic brand name for the newly established Abu Dhabi Health Information Exchange, now known as Malaffi. The EMR system at SEHA was then rebranded to Salamtak, which is used today. Please note that the use of these names correctly is very important to avoid misunderstanding.

Will patients have access to Malaffi?

Patients will have access to their key information in Malaffi through the patient portal and app that will be available in 2022. This will empower and encourage patients to take a more proactive approach to manage their health.
